Is TikTok Getting Banned In The US?

After the departure of TikTok from India and HongKong, the USA might be following too. Although there are no obvious statements from federal workers and the US government, we might witness TikTok losing its current biggest market. TikTok has been the victim of multiple accusations worldwide regarding data theft and violation of privacy. If this is true then we can possibly expect a ban from one of the oldest and truest democracies in the world. So, is TikTok getting banned in the USA? I have put some research on this topic and came up with some helpful information.

Currently, it is fair to say that there is a 50-50 chance of TikTok getting and not getting banned in the USA. Even if the USA implements the ban, it might be limited to federal workers and military personnel. Amid the COVID 19 crisis, the USA might delay the ban implementation on regular people because this is the only source of entertainment and income for millions of creators. Also, the US brands that use the platform for marketing would have to bear some heavy losses. So, modifying some privacy policies would be the right thing to do instead of just banning the app.

Let’s study this case in more detail and know more about the possibility of this ban implementation.

Is TikTok Getting Banned In The USA?

We are in a situation where a simple prediction would not be enough. Although the Trump administration has talked about banning TikTok, we are not sure how they will carry out the ban.

These are the major events that took place after India banned TikTok:

  • White House adviser Peter Navarro said to expect “strong action” from Donald Trump on TikTok, WeChat, and other Chinese apps.
  • Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the U.S. government is “looking at” potentially banning TikTok.
  • Amazon initially sent an email asking its employees to remove TikTok from their mobile devices because of unspecified “security risks,”. Amazon spokesperson told CNBC the email to employees asking them to delete TikTok “was sent in error.”

All these events clearly suggest that something isn’t right and US companies and politicians are against  TikTok.

Tech Rivalry Between US And China

The tech rivalry between China and the USA has been around for quite some time. A similar situation began last year when the U.S. government added Chinese smartphone maker Huawei Technologies to the US economic blacklist. Google blocked Huawei’s access to its Android operating system as a result of the blacklisting.

China constantly cloning major US-based tech companies like Facebook, Google, Amazon, etc is another thing to talk about. Chinese people aren’t allowed to use these platforms and instead have to rely on Chinese clone products like WeChat which use similar technology. Because of this, the big names have to bear billions of worth of loss every year.

This rivalry has to lead to accusations of data theft and violation of privacy. Especially China has been the victim of these accusations and is slowly losing its well-established reputation in the tech world. These two countries have been handling this rivalry very badly. This will create more barriers between the countries, decoupling their economy.

So, if the US bans TikTok, don’t get too surprised.

Is TikTok A Safe Platform?

If the US bans TikTok any day then it would be due to security concerns. After India banned TikTok, the US and other countries from all around the world have been looking at this issue. In fact, this is not a new thing and data safety on TikTok has always been a global concern.

Let’s go back to 2017 when the Chinese Government imposed the National Intelligence Law. China’s National Intelligence Law from 2017 requires organizations san citizens to “support, assist, and cooperate with the state intelligence law“. It means that if the Chinese government needs some private data of users for “security reasons” then the company has no legal way fo refusing the government.

This is not just the case in India. The Dutch Data Protection Board and the European Data Protection Authority has also been raising serious concerns over TikTok’s safety. In fact, the Australian and US military have completely banned TikTok.

Most recently, IOS14 users have noticed that TikTok can read the data that you have copied in your clipboard too. Think of all the important data like OTP, MPINS, Passwords, and your forwards that you copy on your clipboard.

What Could Be The Possible Consequences?

There would uncountable consequences if the US bans TikTok. It will mainly have a great effect on content creators and TikTok. After losing India, TikTok will lose its current biggest market. Two consecutive big hits in a row and TikTok might shut down forever.

There are more than 30 million TikTok users in the USA. Most of them are teenagers aged 13-19. Charli D’Amelio and Loren Gray are currently the most popular TikTok stars and they are both from the USA. Out of the top 10 most followed TikTok accounts, 7 are from the USA. This clearly shows the growing popularity of TikTok among youths in the USA.

Also, different US-based brands use TikTok for marketing purposes. This will result in billions of dollars worth of loss.

Looking at the positive side, it would be some sort of relief for those parents who always wanted their kids to get away from TikTok.

What Can Content Creators From USA Do?

This would be the right time for content creators to shift to a new platform. The TikTok ban in India came with a surprise and it affected a lot of creators. US creators can avoid this by taking precautions a bit early. Instagram launched a new short video feature in India called Reels. If TikTok is banned in India, similar updates could be seen in the US too.

If we talk about tech, America is definitely the biggest name. So it won’t be long before Americans create a new alternative for TikTok. Shifting all their followers to Instagram would be the best choice for American content creators.

My Opinion

Amid all these COVID-19 pandemic tensions, TikTok has been playing a great role in keeping youngsters locked in. TikTok has been a major source of entertainment and income for many popular creators. So, banning it at these difficult times and circumstances would not be reasonable.

Conclusion

All in all, the odds of TikTok getting banned in the USA is higher at the moment. Also, the ban in the US will encourage many American and European countries to take similar actions. So TikTok should expect some large heavy blows within the next few months.
